Toronto Hydro, Enbridge and ORHMA dish up savings for local restaurants

Going green can make more green for restaurants. According to a recent Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") poll, seven out of 10 Torontonians would prefer to dine at a green establishment (1). And being green doesn't just make these businesses more attractive to potential customers; it can also help translate into higher profits through lower energy and maintenance costs.

Look who took advantage of Power Savings Blitz for a free lighting upgrade

Segar, on Bayview Avenue

Segar, on Bayview Avenue, features unique Spice Route cuisine that builds on the meeting of many cultures. Like any good restaurateur, owner Segar Kulasegarampillai knows the importance of controlling overhead costs wherever possible.

For the Power Savings Blitz program, the restaurant received 15 compact fluorescent bulbs in offices and staircases, and 16 T8 energy-efficient fluorescent fixtures in the kitchen and prep areas.

"These are lights that are on nearly all of the time, so reducing electricity costs there sure helps," said Kulasegarampillai. "The lighting in the kitchen and prep areas is especially nice, very bright, nice to work in. This is a program I would recommend to my fellow restaurateurs. Everything helps."

Changing your restaurant’s toilets makes 'cents' and dollars.

Domestic water use accounts for up to 35% of all water used in restaurants.

Replacing conventional water guzzling toilets with new low flow models can save between 16% and 20% of the water used, resulting in lower water bills and lower environmental impact. Some Ontario municipalities, such as the City of Toronto, Region of Peel, and York Region, offer rebate programs to assist residents and businesses in making the switch to low flow toilets.

Efficiency Delivers Delicious Savings!

Green-Eats would like to thank all who attended the Expo on Oct. 28 at the Hyatt Regency Toronto On King.

We had a great turnout and restaurateurs learned a lot about the energy conservation programs that Toronto Hydro and Enbridge Gas are offering.

For those who were unable to attend, the Green-Eats program is a great opportunity for restaurants to do energy-efficient retrofits– helping you save money and energy both in the short and long term!

The program is only running until the end of November, so please contact us at your earliest convenience.
